Healing

Q. The book says, "You heal one wound box, plus one extra box per victory if you win." What does this mean?
A. This is poorly worded. Here's what happens: When you take a Healing interlude, first you automatically heal one wound box. Then, you heal an additional box for each victory on your roll. This means that even if you fail your healing roll, you still heal one wound box.

Weapons

Q. How can I get a second Javelin?
A. When you select Javelins as your ranged weapons, you are assumed to have as many as you need. You never run out.

Armor

Q. How do I repair armor?
A. You remove armor impairment with interlude refreshment, just like any ability impairment.

Q. Do dice penalties from wounds affect armor rolls?
A. No.

Q. Can you use Creative Abilities on armor rolls?
A. No.

Q. Do NPCs get the same penalties for wearing armor as PC heroes?
A. Yes.

Creative Abilities

Q. Can I use creative abilities (p. 38) during a battle? The book doesn't explicitly say this, but it's implied.
A. Yes you can! You can add creative ability dice to any roll (except armor).

Q. Is there a limit to the number of creative abilities I can add to a roll?
A. No. Add as many as you like, as long as you describe how each ability helps your hero.

Q. When can I add creative ability dice?
A. Creative ability dice can be added before or after your roll. You can wait to see if your armor helps before adding creative ability dice in defense, for example. You can also choose to add creative abilities after you see what the opponent has rolled.

Heroic Abilities

Q. If you have, say, +2 Cunning from Clever-Eyed, and lend your Cunning Die to another (or are called upon to use Cunning by an oath), does the +2 apply?
A. Yes.

Q. How do I apply the damage bonus from Monster-Slayer and Man-Killer?
A. The damage bonus from Monster-Slayer and Man-Killer (p. 21) is added to the final wound box result against the target. After you determine damage normally, increase the final wound result by one. If this new result would mark a box that is already marked, then the damage is carried up to the next-highest unmarked box, as normal.

Here's an example: Tereus the Monster-Slayer hits the gorgon and has 3 total victories. Normally, this would hit the gorgon's '3' box on her wound track. However, this box has already been marked. So, the damage carries up to the '4' box, which is unmarked. This is where normal damage would stop. NOW, we apply the damage bonus from the Monster-Slayer trait. The damage is increased by one, to '5'. However, the gorgon's '5' box is already marked! This means that the damage carries up to the '6' box, and the gorgon is defeated.

Yeah. Nasty. Those heroic traits don't apply to all opponents, but when they do, look out.

Advantage Contests

Q. Can I have an advantage die contest (p. 39) during a battle?
A. Yes! The contest replaces your attack roll during the exchange. This is a great way to gain an advantage in the fight, by using one of your other abilities in an interesting way. Using an ability for an advantage contest does not automatically impair it (although it does become impaired if you lose the contest).

Q. Can I give my advantage die to another hero?
A. Usually, yes. As long as you can describe how you use the advantage to help the other hero, you can pass the advantage die over to her. This is usually a good time to negotiate an oath payment.

Modifiers

Q. How do bonuses and penalties work?
A. Modifiers can be confusing, but there's a simple rule to remember. If you have a bonus or penalty modifier, it applies to the highest die in your pool, whatever that may be. Bonuses or penalties are never attached to a particular die. See page 17.

So, if you are casting your javelin (1d6+1), and you have 2d6 1d8 in your pool, then the +1 from the javelin will apply to any die that comes up highest. NOT just to the d6 from the javelin.

Let's take another case. Your hero is Strong-Limbed. You get +2 to Might and Wrestle rolls. You decide to attack with your d10 Sword skill, and add your d6 Might and d6 Wrestle in as creative abilities. You also roll your sword dice (2d6). So, you would roll 1d10 4d6, with a +4 total bonus to the highest die, even if it's the d10 from your Sword ability.

Oaths

Q. When you demand help from another using an oath, do you choose which ability they use?
A. No. The hero who is demanding help may state the task he or she requires help with, but the hero that is helping may choose which ability to use, as long as they can justify the choice through narration.

Example: if you say "Lukos! Assist me to lift this big rock" you are totally trolling for his Might die, but cleverly he might say "Ah, I cast about for a suitable lever, and a place to rest it. Here is my Cunning die."

Q. When you use an Oath to make someone do a healing roll during an interlude, or a positioning move during a battle, does that Cancel the Oath?
A. Yes.

Divine Favor

Q. When I spend Divine Favor to add a d6 or d8 to my roll, do I add the result of the extra die to my highest roll?
A. No. You simply add the extra die to your pool and roll it with the other dice.

Q. When I spend 2 Divine Favor to "attack again" (p.70), what happens?
A. Pick up all the dice you just used to attack, and roll them again. If you had bonus dice in your pool from creative abilities, or advantage dice, or anything like that, you get to use them again in the second roll. Yes, this is awesome.

Fate and Gods

Q. The rules say you can challenge a god – what’s the difficulty? Is it like a Sacrifice, where the god rolls a single d12?
A. Yes. The god rolls a d12 vs. your Spirit.

Minions

Q. If you meet a band of minions and their master isn’t present, do they still get his name die?
A. Yes. As long as the master is alive, the minions get to roll his or her name die.

Q. How do the extra gang-up dice apply to attack and defense?
A. The gang-up bonus applies only to attack rolls.

Tracking Modifiers

Q. Is there an easy way to track bonuses and/or wound penalties?
A. I like to use little glass gaming stones. Hand out green stones for positioning bonuses, yellow stones for temporary wound penalties, and red stones for permanent wound penalties. Just put them right there in the middle of the character sheet so you don't forget them.

Advancement

Q. Can an ability be increased beyond d10 by spending advances?
A. Yes! You can raise an ability from d10 to d12 by spending 5 advances. The d10 ability cap only applies during character creation.

Interference

Q. Can I interfere with another hero during a contest roll?
A. Sort of. You can "interfere" by joining the contest roll with a slightly different goal, and then beating the other hero. For example, you might want to join the Hunt contest to ambush an enemy so you can "Make Tereus look like a moron." Then if you win, not only do you master the ambush, but you get to say how Tereus looks foolish.

I make no guarantees about how your fellow players will treat you if you do this. You're on your own.

Glory

Q. Does a Hero in a simple contest by himself automatically gain glory for having the highest hero result?
A. Yes. The extra Glory is equal to the amount of Strife spent, plus one.

Hubris

Q. Hubris is mentioned in the Credits, but not in the game itself. What is Hubris?
A. It's on page 36. It's something of a problematic rule, if overused, so be warned.
