Optional Rule

These rules were included in the GenCon version of the rulebook, but have been removed from the post-GenCon printing. It was felt that while they are thematic, they negatively impact the core PvP element of game play. They are presented here if you'd like to experiment with them in your own game.

Instead of attacking an enemy, you may instead challenge it to a one-on-one duel, known as aristeia. If the enemy agrees to the combat, move both combatants off the range strip. Weapon range is not a factor in aristeia. Both combatants then make new position rolls. The winner of this contest gets a +2 bonus to his or her next attack during the duel. Aristeia combat is otherwise handled just like regular combat. Aristeia attacks happen first during every exchange. The winner of the aristeia position roll gets to go first.

The two combatants remain locked in the aristeia until one of the fighters calls for help, is defeated, or gives up. If a fighter calls for help during his turn (instead of attacking), the aristeia combatants are moved back on to the range strip (in the same positions they left) and rejoin the normal battle. The fighter who calls for help owes one oath to every other hero.

Heroes have the option to refuse an aristeia challenge. If you refuse, your name is impaired by one level.
