Some Meta Human? individuals are created by a the process of genetic aberration (one of several results of the activation of the Tunguska Field). Many more children, however, are much more negatively affected by this process, and are not born alive. Named for the angel of death, the Azrael Effect is the name for this phenomenon of increased child mortality.

Much more odd, however, is that apparently the effect extends back to the Tunguska Field itself. Most (possibly all, but this is not at all clear) infants who are killed by the effect "imprint" on the field, altering it in a profound way, such that their potential minds seem to develop within the field. Which is to say that many Deep Empaths sense the imprinting on the field and interact with the "entities" that exist therin. These thought patterns would surely not have evolved, in fact, had many Deep Empaths not been unable to avoid contact with the child-entities of the Tunguska Field. It seems that interaction with more developed adult minds is the cause for their apparent "maturation."

The result of this process is, in the end, to make it very much seem as if ghosts of children taken by the Azrael Effect exist to be contacted by mediums. The question of how "real" these entities are is an open one. But they certainly do interact with humans via empaths, and do seem to develop as individuals over time. As such, a few have become functional members of society, if in a detached manner.
