The "comics code" is a means by which players of Capes can define, up front, what kind of game they want. It consists of a series of rules that describe what kind of game the players, collectively, want to play. During play, no narration can violate the comics code, though goals may be declared that would seem to push the game in the direction of violating it. The comics code addresses ONLY _events_ that happen within play; it does not address, for example, choosing what characters will be played by a character. That falls under House Rules instead.

For example, in a game where the comics code says, "Exemplars do not die," a goal can be declared, "Kill Doctor Lucky." If Doctor Lucky is an exemplar, then ANY time the goal would be resolved, the winner must "gloat" instead. Gloating is a mechanic by which a player delays resolution of a conflict that he would otherwise win, in return for a bribe of one or more story tokens.

For this game I propose that we write lines of the comics code here, and "buy in" by including a line with our names, and the numbers of the lines that we advocate. When we're ready to play, we can tally them up and see which ones we're going to use.

  1. Earth, or large portions thereof, is not destroyed or rendered uninhabitable
  2. Superheroes do not die
  3. Supervillains do not die
  4. Exemplars do not die
  5. Krakatoa is not destroyed or rendered uninhabitable
  6. Time travel is impossible
  7. No spandex
  8. No silly names
  9. No vigilantism unless there's an IC reason
  • FredWolke My preferences: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
  • James Nostack prefers 1, 6, 7, 8, 9
  • Tony Lower-Basch prefers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
  • Selene Tan? prefers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. James, can you look at Freez0r and tell me if that's too much outside your bounds? Then we can negotiate!
  • James says, "Don't worry about it, I was operating on an earlier notion of the aesthetic, but am now revising my opinion."
