The Alone War

Your characters will live near the town of Alone, in the Hidden Valley, in the northeast corner of Dragon Pass. That area has been war-torn. Harvar Ironfist, a self-styled “Prince of Sartar” and Duke of Alda-chur who has sold his soul to the false Sun God Yelmalio, sends mercenaries here. In the Battle of Grizzly Peak, most of his mercenaries were driven away, but Alone was reduced to only 500 people. The old clan was shattered, but a new clan forms from rebels, outlaws, and zealots. Anyone that is true to the Storm Gods is welcome to join the new clan. Many refugees from other destroyed clans find a home here.
In addition to the Orlanthi, there are some others here. Trolls live to the east. The most intrepid of them may even wander the same mountains as you, and some humans who worship Argar Argan, the Son of Night, act as emissaries. These people are welcomed into villages (although not into the clan) for they keep the trolls from eating everything. Alone was actually built on top of an old troll city and has a deep underground component. (Yep, we'll probably have a dungeon crawl at some point.)
The most immediate areas are:
- North lies Amadhall, a home of the rebel Amad clan. They – just to complicate matters – worship Elmal, who is also a sun god, but he's the Sun God of the Orlanthi pantheon, so he's cool. It is a long and winding path through the Lost Woods into the Sheep of Luck Hills to get there. Further north is the Vale of Flowers?, where huge flowers grow, giant insects fly, and trolls stomp on the ground. Giants used to come through here, and some say giants still sleep in the flowers.
- Northeast is the Deadwood. In the center is a dragonnewt city, Contemplative Rest. Stay away if you can.
- East are the Indigo Mountains. They are huge, steep, and house many trolls.
- Southeast is Storlock, another village. This one is full of Torkani, Heortlings who worship Argar Argan as their primary god instead of Orlanth. They aren't bad and they trade with trolls. They're just confused, probably. Further is Good Rain Hill, where a frozen lake tops the hill.
- South is the Lizardwood Wilds, which are actually pretty nice. The Torkani do fight a lot with the sun worshippers of Alda-Chur here, or more correctly, the mercenaries of Alda-Chur. These woods are sacred to a goddess named Asrelia, the mother of all goddesses in the Storm Tribe, and giant reptiles once lived there. Now most lizards there are small and unintelligent, but wise people still make sure not to harm them.
- Southwest are the Woods of the Dead. Beware all who would enter here. Long ago, a renegade chieftain was cast out, cursed to eat only the dead, and he led his tribe here. Performing dark magic, he became the King of Ghouls, and his undead tribe lives here to this day. The ghosts of those he unjustly killed persue him through the forest and keep him trapped, although sometimes his ghouls can push their way up into the Hidden Valley.
- West is the long pathway to Far Point, where Harvar Ironfist rules. Along the way is Sword Hill, which is a volcanic mountain covered in giant sword-like black stones. The worshippers of Humakt, the Orlanthi death-god, have a large temple here. They raid the Woods of the Dead to destroy the mockeries there.
- Northwest is the Lost Woods and the Lost Man Wilds. They are not too bad, although constant rain from the mountains makes them muddy and a trail cannot hold, causing those not familiar with the area to lose their way. This area was home to the Tovtaros tribe, also known as the Bluefoot. They were a wild group of Heortlings, known for ritually tattooing their feet and legs and being amazing scouts. Harvar Ironfist has beat them savagely, though. The survivors converted to his faith and now worship Doburdun, a weak fake storm god of the Solar Pantheon, and they have been renamed the Black Oak Clan?. Their main settlement is near Ironspike, an ancient and maybe-cursed hill fortress. A few rebels still fight for lives in the forests and caves of the Lost Man Wilds and have taken up raiding travelers.
