This is the term for a model originally proposed by Kevin Hardwick on rgfa in January 1995, and further developed in set of essays by Kevin Hardwick and Sarah Kahn. It proposes four 'Narrative Stances', namely: in-character, audience, actor, and director (which was later re-named "author"). The original post [1] by Kevin exists on the web, but Sarah and Kevin's collaborative essays do not.

While the 4 stances share names in common with Forge-style Stance theory, the narrative stance model "describes the ways in which the *narrative* of the game is viewed by its participants." [2] Stance theory, on the other hand, focuses on what position the player takes in acting within the game.
