Acknowledging the Addiction

This post may seem at odds with my last one, talking about my CoH/V plans, but I'm a complicated guy.

So...

  • Changes in work or school attendance, quality of work, work output, grades, discipline.
  • Unusual flare-ups or outbreaks of temper.
  • Withdrawal from responsibility.
  • General changes in overall attitude.
  • Deterioration of physical appearance and grooming.
  • Association with other known abusers.
  • Secretive behavior regarding actions and possessions; poorly concealed attempts to avoid attention given to changed behaviors.

That's a partial list of tell-tales to watch for in your loved ones, in order to spot substance abuse. It looks a lot (too much) like what I've allowed from my CoH involvement in the last year.

There's a longer list, and it's accurate too, but I don't feel like sharing some of the other items on the list.

So what's that mean?

  1. CoH is a game. It's a pastime, when you need some entertainment and don't have other things that should be done.
  2. At times, it's fine to rearrange one's schedule for the game -- task forces require some time commitment, RP play-dates ditto (and moreso), whatever -- but when you're rearranging your *life* to prioritize the game at the top of the list 6 out of every 7 days... well, if this were booze or drugs or gambling getting attention in this way, people would have stepped in already.
  3. I have things I want to do with my life (and a *life* that requires and moreover *deserves* my full and heartfelt attention and involvement) that I'm not doing -- have put off -- because of the time I've put into the game: Being Daddy, Being Husband, writing, reading... the list goes on.
  4. I love my friends that play CoH with me, both locally and abroad. I have experienced a great deal of joy while playing the game, and there's (only a) few indications that this is changing, even after a year. I love this game.

What's that mean?

I'm not quitting. At this point, I don't believe that's necessary; I know people (Kate and ***Dave, for different reasons) who do the things I want to do and be involved in and, simply, *be* in my life, and they play. I don't need to quit -- I believe that's the same kind of extremism that made the game too important in the first place.

* I need the game to be a game; an entertaining pastime: no more, and no less.

* I need my friends to be friends, BEYOND (and not intrinsically tied to) the game (so that my need for their continued friendship and presence in my life doesn't bleed over into a need to "LOG IN").

What's that mean?

Well, I'm going to bed a lot earlier -- two to three hours or so earlier on average, in fact, and most days I've been logging in later -- sometimes (like last night) not at all. Net, that works out to 3 to 4 hours less play-time a night, and the sad, scary thing is, that means I'm "cutting back" to a mere 4 to 5 hours a night.

I'm not racing anyone, even myself, to some mythical end-point anymore. I'm not dying for the next new power.

What I have is stories I want to tell, friends I want to 'see', and some days, the simple desire to blow shit up.

I want to log in and have a good time, and have it not impact my family (my wife, my daughter, and my life). Those two things can happen together, and I hope they do, but if that's not possible I'll take my life and dump the game, thanks. That's not negotiable, in my mind.

I'm going to keep tweaking my play time until the above goals happen.

What you can do
Don't think I hate you or I'm losing interest if I'm not on as much.

What you can't do
Ask me if I need to log off or get going; if I'm logged in, it's because I want to be, and more importantly because I think I *can* be.

Week in review

Another CoH Play Update, yes, however...

This week, I also sent out stuff for running a Heroquest game, and a Risus game -- both in January... so... woo :)

Hang Time
(Level: 50)
No play or RP.

Hyperthermian
(Level: 48)
No play or RP.

Strategist
(Level: 33)
No play or RP.

Still haven't met "The Tactician" -- Strategist's "student gone BAD".

Having a lot of trouble getting into this character's head -- I feel like I took him somewhere he was meant to go, but along a path that is strange and hard to travel for me.

Dunno. Need to think about that.

Epitaph
(level: 32)
No play or RP.

Gilly
(level: 19)
No play or RP.

Kethos
(Level: 22)
No play or RP.

What's the influence-to-dollars exchange rate on Ebay, again? :P

Pummelcite
(Level: 17 18 ((new)))

No RP, but I did get to tank tank for an ArchVillain-hunting Storm Knightish group this week with some other folks who did all the actual work, and watched Kessa ding level 50. (I dinged the somewhat less exciting levels of 17 and 18.)

I like playing this guy, even though he "can't herd as was as a rad/dark defender."

I just like playing tanks. It's my thing.

Shade Dancer
(Level: 14)
No play or RP. Head (and tentacles) are on the chopping block.

Barret
(Level: 12)
No play or RP.

Countersign
(Level 13)
No play or RP.

Thadeus Shiver (Ice/Ice Dominator)
(Level 6)
No play or RP. I like the RP I had with Kate's character, but at the same time I actually found him a bit easier to play as an Ice/Storm Controller. We'll see.

Markov Chain
(Level 11 12 13 14 15 16 17: ((New)))

Obviously, I played Markov a lot. :) Yes, it was farming the Christmas Present mission for xp for level 11 to 15, but it was dangerous, I put myself at risk, got ganked multiple times and generally *worked* for this PL*. Level 16 and 17 came in the Strike Force that we did on Sunday so try to tell me we didn't work for that. Bleah.

Gameplay
Love this archetype. Blastery damage and some support = good stuff. He's level 17 now and hasn't started on the Stamina line, but honestly? Not sure he will -- I might just drop one endrdx in every power he has and see how that works... 2 acc, 3 dam works for the attacks, after all.

Awesome combo with Stalkers, now that he's got the Concealment pool. Snipe target, hide, queue Siphon Power, guy comes around the corner, Siphon Power kicks off, Stalker-partner taps Build Up and hits for obscene amounts of damage. Much fun.

Good: Every power from the AT is an attack of some kind. No forcefieldish things to renew (with one "ugly" exception).

Bad: Every power from the AT is an attack of some kind. Slotting with enhancements is EXPENSIVE.

Ugly: Increase Density -- great power, stupidly short duration. Every other shieldish power in the game has a 4-minute duration; why not this?

Lucian Strange
(Level 14: ((New)))

Broadsword/Regen scrapper. Lucian is coming in as the long-missing husband of another player's character -- not sure exactly what happened to him or how, just yet -- I'm focusing on RPing his actual personality right now (Lucian is a Chick. Magnet. I mean, daaaamn -- never seen anything like it.), and getting him leveled up to his past-future was-wife.

Upcoming:

Some kind of Mind/* controller for FOUND house -- a reformed member of the Lost, modeled off the look of the guys who wear the football helmets and the STOP signs on their chest. Still no idea what secondary to pick, though. I actually might go with trick-arrow -- I like the sort of neo-luddite, "I don't trust any tech, after what the Rikti did to us", feel.

Dunno. Need to delete a champion character before I can make this guy up anyway.

CoH Play Review

Let's see whats been going on in the last week eleven days...

(You're going to see a lot of "No play or RP," cuz I haven't been on that much. C'esh luu vin.)

Hang Time
(Level: 50)
No play or RP.

Hyperthermian
(Level: 48)

No play or RP.

Strategist
(Level: 33)

No play or RP.

Someone made up the MA/Ninja Stalker "The Tactician" as one of Strategist's "students gone BAD". Much fun.

Epitaph
(level: 30, 31, 32 ((NEW!)))

No RP, exactly. There's stuff going on, but it's all having sort of prep stuff for Working Girl or things of that nature. I have (obviously) been playing him a lot -- but even that was more last week than this week.

Gameplay notes: Dinged 30 through 32. Picked up Conserve Power at level 30 and I LOVE IT LIKE LYLE, OMG. Baaaarely dinged 32 and picked up this power that keeps these little glowballs around me that fly out and blow up when I get near an enemy. They're a lot more subtle than they sound. I haven't actually had a chance to check them out in a mission, because I logged right after picking the power up and getting the level 35 enhancements and haven't had him on since. Nigh on a week, really. Looking forward to that.

Gilly
(level: 19)

No play or RP.

Kethos
(Level: 22 ((New)))

No RP. Dinged 22 on him last night and got Conserve as my second "Endurance Healing" power -- which had the predicted positive effects on his playability.

Now if I could just get him out of fricking Training SO's :P

Pummelcite
(Level: 16)

Had a really REALLY cool deal with Lukacs and one of Jackie's characters last weekend. Haven't had a chance to go back and get into that more, but I was really pleased about how that went -- very political and kind of conniving, but honest and refreshing, too.

Shade Dancer
(Level: 14)

No play or RP.

Barret
(Level: 12)

No play or RP.

Countersign
(Level 13)

No play or RP.

Thadeus Shiver (Ice/Ice Dominator)
(Level 6)

No play or RP.

On deck... New:

Markov Chain
(Level 10: ((New)))

My new Corruptor. Technology-based Assault Rifle/Kinetics. This is the guy who will get the much coveted 'other evil guy I play' slot, alongside Kethos. LOVE the play of this archetype when I'm in a blastery/supporty mood, which is weird because I've tried out Assault Rifle before and hated it. A good character concept works wonders for an otherwise annoying Archetype, I guess.

Picking up pool powers to make him work as close to a Stalker as I can, so I can work as closely WITH a stalker as I can. :)

REALLY looking forward to playing this guy more.

Lucian Strange
(Level 12: ((New)))

Broadsword/Regen scrapper. Lucian coming in as the long-missing husband of another player's character -- not sure exactly what happened to him or how, just yet -- I'm focusing on RPing his actual personality right now (Lucian is a Chick. Magnet. I mean, daaaamn -- never seen anything like it.), and getting him leveled up to his past-future was-wife.

Gameplay Notes:
Only my second scrapper, and I went back to Super Reflexes again?!? Am I nuts? Well...

1. I know Super Reflexes: the good, the bad, and the (damn) ugly. There's that.
2. Stan showed me how Katana Set's "Divine Avalanche" has a nice defensive synergy with SR's toggles, and Broadsword has the same ability in "Parry", so I wanted to explore that.
3. Lucian kicks ass.

Only my second scrapper evah, and I am loving this toon.

CoH Villain thought for the day

Vampires...

GIANT robots...

The Council gets *all* the best bad-guy schticks.

"Vast tracts of... heroism..."

New Hero "Salutes" Puck Bunny

So. Funny.

Week in review

Let's see what's going on...

Hang Time
(Level: 50)
No roleplay this week. Logged him in for four and a half minutes to help Nikodemos kick the hell out of Nosferatu, then left.

Hyperthermian
(Level: 48 ((NEW!)))

Played Hype a little bit this week and dinged 48. Beat up some Arch-Villains and picked on Seventy-Six. Fun times. Still one of my favorite toons to play, and characters to roleplay.

Strategist
(Level: 33)

No roleplay for him this week, except for general IC-ness during a run of the Katie Hannon task force.

Gameplay-wise: Still working GREAT -- no faceplants during the TF, and he dished out some INSANE damage on the TF and got some xp, so that's fun. There's a very complicated fight at the start of the Task Force that we pulled of damn near perfectly, so that was fun.

Update:

Forgot to mention that someone made up the MA/Ninja Stalker "The Tactician" as one of Strategist's "students gone BAD". Much fun.

Epitaph
(level: 28, 29 ((NEW!)))

John's had... a lot of stuff going on. Damn.

He's very very 'with' Ren (Hekuba) now, and the whole Working Girl story took an AWESOME twist this last week that I absolutely LOVE.

He found out that Pearl was his wife in his old life, and they had themselves a talk about that that... well, it was great, but it also showed that they really weren't happy in the old days.

The one thing really rubbing John wrong about that is that he can't abide that Pearl thinks so poorly of him... not so much for where he is now, but for who is was then. That bugs him.

In other news:
* Raene (the real Raene) flipped out and ran to the Rogue Isles, and her Doppelganger is actually ... well, staying good? It hasn't developed all the way, yet, but I LIKE it. Very cool story.

Gameplay notes: Dinged to 28 AND 29 yesterday, picked up ... whatever they call the "fireball" power at 28, so I can hit everyone near me and get everyone attacking him... dunno if I like the power itself too much, but it does the job I want it to do... might drop it later. I almost think that getting the low-level, high-speed, low-damage, low-end-cost ranged attack that I skipped at level 1 might be better, just so he always has something to throw, even when he's tired out. It's tempting, both because it's fast and ranged -- I'm always getting immobilized, and being able to reach the bad guys with SOMETHING is really useful.

Ran the Terra Volta Trial with him, and the Citadel Task Force with him, AND finished up the level 25-30 Kheldian story arc, AND finished the Striga Isle story arc (which means he can do the Hess Task Force now). Lots of play on him. Good stuff.

Gilly
(level: 19)

Nada. Good build. Fun character. Never play her.

Kethos
(Level: 21)

Haven't played him this week. Damn. Shame.

Pummelcite
(Level: 16 ((New)))

Lukacs discovered where Sam Wincott's being held in the Hollows, did a lot of reseach on it, and assembled a crack team of Storm Knights to rescue him before the Circle of Thorns opens the portal within the Cavern of Pain Transcendance.

Utterly destroyed that Trial. 23 minutes from start to finish. Owned.

Gameplay notes:
Very happy to have made the sacrifices I did with Pummelcite's build. He has no movement powers, but he could tank the damage for an eight person team, and handle the incoming smash/lethal and fire damage to the extent that he needed to. I'm pleased.

Shade Dancer
(Level: 14)

No recent gameplay or roleplay.

Barret
(Level: 13)

Didn't play him this week.

Markov Chain Countersign
(Level 13 (New))

Redid Counter's face a bit and I'm MUCH happier with how he looks. Finally got through the Beautiful Dead mission, so he's moving along (At a snail's pace, but moving), and trying to catch up with some special people. :)

Thadeus Shiver (Ice/Ice Dominator)
(Level 6 (New))

Wind and Cold slow
heartbeats.

Snow and Ice know
death.

Sun and Moon shine
silver.

Not all elves make
toys.

I love this character concept.

Still having trouble finding an Archetype I like playing him with. I actually liked him better as an Ice/Storm Controller Hero, but look at that poem -- he's a BAD GUY.

So... ice/ice dominator... but damn. Dominators are SQUISHY. SO SQUISHY.

Need some minions. I need some people to hide behind.

(( :) ))

I need to hang with that Necromancy mastermind he rolled with this weekend. Really. Fun. Time.

((Yeah, died alot, but NO DEBT TIL LEVEL 10! Woo!))

On deck...

I want to make a Corruptor...
